Great accessory for my guitar Apr 22, 2006
By Joseph W. Keyes I have an Alvarez RD8 acoustic dreadnaught and wanted to experiment with mixing my own playing and singing using an entry-level mixer, mike, and this device. It was sort of a "reality check" to see if anything sounded good enough to perform -- I'm still working on that part. The pickup was a pleasant surprise. It fit the sound hole perfectly though the cable is prone to getting in the way (that's the reason for the 4 stars). It's quite an experience to hear yourself "plugged in" for the first time. I'd recommend this pick-up to anyone who uses an plain acoustic and want to record or amplify their guitar. It's a good name brand, nice price, and of good quality constuction. I didn't experience and distortion or feedback problems and so far, the neighbors haven't complained either.

Don't expect miracles and you'll be pleased Jan 25, 2011
By Doc Feetz I bought this to use on an old acoustic for slide playing. If I could play like Norman Blake and wanted to get that perfect tone through a sound board, I'd have an undersaddle piezo pickup installed and run it through some fancy digital DI unit. As it is, I wanted to cut through bar noise and hope no one hears my mistakes too clearly.
This is a pretty nice pickup for what it does. It's advantages are also the source of its disadvantages, for the most part. It's inexpensive, puts out a strong signal with no need for a preamp, captures the string sound accurately, and doesn't introduce any noise or characteristics of its own. It doesn't require ANY installation (not even tape or screwdriver), and it's easy to put on and take off. It has a nice long cord and will work with any amp. The coils seem to be accurately positioned for my guitars, though they're not adjustable like the ones on the Baggs soundhole pickups. (It's also a lot cheaper than the Baggs, and no uglier.)
On the down side, it's very visible, tends to get in the way (especially the cord, since it runs out of the soundhole right by the high E string), looks a bit dorky (though natural wood has its appeal), and offers no onboard adjustments on the basic model. I got the single coil, and have had no problems with hum into my Twin Reverb amp. It's very bright, and needs a bit of tweaking with the tone controls to get a good sound, but if you have treble, mid, and bass, you should be able to manage it. You could probably rotate it like they suggest, to vary the bass/treble balance, but that would look even dorkier. They also suggest that you can move it closer to the strings (by skootching the foam padding around the soundhole edge) for more signal, but I can't see why you'd need to and that would make it feel even more in the way. At its lowest height, it still blasts.
It sounds like an electric guitar, duh. You want subtle tonal palettes, you'll have to spend more money. On my Epiphone dreadnaught, it sounds as good as the system built into my Taylor, and doesn't need a battery. I haven't tried it in the Taylor, which would make an interesting comparison.
I found the cord a bit scarred from being pinched by the zip tie they put on, but no effect on the signal quality. They anticipate that the solderless plug can come loose eventually, but provide instructions for fixing it if it does. There's a warranty, and I'm sure they would replace it if it fails. But the web page to register the warranty was broken and I didn't see a way to do it. I'll just keep my receipt.
All in all, for what it does, it's great. And hey - What other pickup can be custom fit to an odd size soundhole by sanding down the edges?

By Zelie Nic I play an acoustic out often. I picked one of these up on a friend's recomendation. These guy's get a 4 out of 5 for sound. For durability they get a 2...
My first one shorted out on me after a couple months. I went out and bought another. This one's still going, but its starting to crackle. Maybe the cord is just cheap.
They sell 'wings' seperate from the pickup. They really improve the sound. I'd recomend picking up a pair if you want to get the most out of these.

Good sound but bad Hummmmm! May 08, 2010
By William A. See III

I play vintage instruments live. So I usually mic them in order to get the natural sound and nuances of the vintage guitars. However, I occasionally need to have an acoustic electric. I was advised to get the DM Pro Mag. I got the single coil at first. I was very impressed with its ability to make a vintage acoustic guitar sound like a vintage acoustic. However the constant Hummmmmmm made it unusable for a performance. I returned it and got a humbucking version (which I should have done from the get go). The humbucking version works perfectly and is silent. Spend a few more dollars and get the humbucking version like Pro Mag Grand or the Pro Mag Grand.
Ok for amateur night.. Mar 08, 2012
By Jason D. Martin Picked this up at a local shop for a gig the next day. I didn't have huge expectations for the thing, single coil in the hole pick-up, what do you want? I have a Martin DX series, and the pickup didn't sit in the hole well at all. I could sort of wedge it back towards the bridge and it would stay, but if it was in the middle of the sound hole it was completely loose. Plugged it in and immediatly had to crank up my amp, which was hissing and buzzing. I unplugged the thing, and swapped it out for another guitar to confirm it was the pickup and not the cord. It was the pick up. No volume control is lame BTW. You need to be able to turn it down or off IMO. I borrowed a guitar and returned it.
The sound is not terrible, it delivers OK tone. You could put one in for open mic night and get away with it. You couldn't record with it, and you sure wouldn't want to get loud with it. If you have the inclination, get a saddle pick up. It's worth the added cost.
