| | Description | The American made Goodtime 17-fret tenor banjo has several features found in competitive banjos costing five times the price. The "better than the price tone" from this banjo comes from: the three-ply maple rim, maple resonator and the maple neck. All of the most popular and reknown banjos in the world are made with a rim that is three plys of maple. The four string maple neck gives the banjo the bright, clear, tone and string to string note separation that is so much in demand by teachers to help students learn to develop their playing technique, without fighting their instrument, which is common with lesser banjos. Whether you want a 17 fret tenor for Irish/Celtic music, dixieland jazz or folk music or to take camping or fishing, the Goodtime 17-fret tenor will keep you company with world class tone, in a simple and economical banjo. | |

Exceptional Value! Mar 18, 2011
By Galen Kearney I'm a long time guitar and 5-string banjo player that wanted a bit of a change. I've been into Irish Folk music for a while and wanted to explore it more, but didn't really want to spend a great deal of money to add to my already too large collection of instruments. I bought the Deering Goodtime Irish Tenor Banjo sight unseen, based in large part on the positive reviews of their 5-string Goodtime Banjos.
I couldn't be more delighted with this instrument. It was set up well right out of the box, all I had to do was tune it up and start playing. I've had the banjo over a year now, and I forget exactly what I paid for it (it was well below MSRP), and I still play it every day. The odd thing is that I haven't felt any desire (as I usually do) to move up to a more expensive higher quality instrument.
Understand that this is a no-frills instrument. There is no fancy binding and only minimal, though nicely done, inlay work of the fretboard. The fit and finish, however, are remarkable for in instrument in this price range. After playing it for a while I opted to go with heavier gauge strings, and once I had set it up for the heavier gauge, the banjo settled in very nicely and has remained rock solid ever since. It holds a tuning exceptionally well. Even the seasonal set-up adjustments to compensate for our dry winters and very damp summers are minimal.
In short, I love this thing! Its lightweight, so small that I routinely take it to work, rugged and sounds great. If mine were damaged or stolen I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Deering really hit the nail on the head with this banjo.

Nice First Banjo Jul 28, 2011
By Crsbryan I was interested in adding a banjo to my collection of interests. I looked at lower-cost instruments, and read reviews on them. Most of my other instruments - ukuleles, guitars, mandolin - are low cost, Asian-made instruments, and sound pretty good. But, after reading reviews, especially at banjohangout.com, I made the decision to order a bit more expensive instrument. Deering is a high-quality, American-made instrument. This is a clean, basic design, without the elaborate resonator and metalwork. Even as their entry-level instrument, it is very nicely built, feels good in the hands, and seems to have been built with care and attention not found on the lower cost imports. Amazon's price is very good, though availability is limited. Normally showing as "ships in 1 to 3 months" I jumped on it when one came available. Sound is very nice. Tuning was pretty easy. I appreciated that the banjo arrived with the bridge already set; most banjos are shipped without the bridge in place leaving the player to set it. Now for some books to help build my chops!
