5Fantastic banjo for a beginner  Mar 13, 2011 By A. M. Bauer
I am a beginning banjo player and, after doing some research, decided that I wanted to invest in an American-made banjo. The Goodtime series has an excellent reputation as a good beginner's banjo and when I saw Amazon's price for this upgraded model, I jumped at it. The banjo has not disappointed in any way. The level of craftsmanship compared to a few other beginner banjos I had looked at in various guitar shops is obvious from the moment you open the box. It is just a really well-made instrument and the sound was great right from the beginning. The planetary tuners have made it easy to keep in perfect tune and I rarely have to make adjustments--a common frustration myself and other friends have had in starting out on cheaper instruments. I have only been playing for about 3 weeks, but it has been a very positive experience thanks to this instrument.

5Right out of the box.  Mar 13, 2012 By Moondog
This is not my first banjo. This is my first good quality banjo. It was obvious as soon as I took it out of the box.
It showed up in perfect condition. The woodwork is quality and looks great. I like the dark stain and satin finish.
I tuned it and as soon as I started playing, I noticed the clear bright tone. Each note rings true and there are no strange vibrations included that my other, more cheaply made banjos had in the past.

Since I got this, I felt good about devoting a lot of time practicing and playing it. It stays in tune with the usual minor adjustments. The hardware, planetary tuners and such are all good quality too.

I like the capo spikes. I can tune to the popular keys with ease.

I did have a chance to call Deering Customer Service with some questions I had. It was nice to find out that they were able to answer my questions, not make me feel like an idiot and they were very friendly too.

I am still a novice and still learning a lot. The neck shape and action on this instrument makes it a lot easier to learn and play and take a lot less effort than the ones I had in the past.

If you have the money and can afford one of Deerings Professional Line models, go for it.

I didn't have that much money. However, I am perfectly happy playing this one for ever how many years it takes for me to save for the step up.

I highly recommend the Deering Goodtime 2 Classic.

5Buy it  Oct 25, 2011 By Jesse 13
Don't be scared by the "beginner banjo" thing. This is an amazing banjo, I've had people with 20+ years of banjo play it and say how great it is. I looked at a few other banjos with more ornate features but I decided to go with a banjo that puts the money in the wood and quality not fancy inlays. If you're looking for a banjo that's going to last, go with this.

5No Doubt About It, This Banjo Is the Real Deal!!  Mar 30, 2012 By C. D. Potter "BlueRanchRider"
This banjo is everything the original Goodtime banjos are and much more. The extras include planetary tuners (compare headstock photos), a more traditional banjo headstock design, spikes for capoing at the 7th, 9th, and 10th frets pre-installed. The color is a beautiful dark stain,(which is one major reason I purchased this one), and the neck has side dots for reference marked now.

The LOOK - This banjo is attractive, much more than the original goodtime. I never liked the blonde look of the original and this one is fabulous. I like the dark 'chocolate' stain and combined with the maple wood it looks gorgeous! The peghead is also traditional banjo shape instead of the square box of the original (again, compare photos). The tailpiece, tuners, head and all are attractive and give the appearance of a high dollar quality banjo.

The SOUND - This banjo sounds awesome. The resonator gives it a bit more volume than the original, and holds back a bit from being the 'special' (tone ring) offered also in the goodtime lineup. But make no mistake about the sound, it is an awesome sound. And I've been told the maple rim continues to develop better sound the more it is played, a common thought of quality musical instruments. Out of the box I was very impressed with the banjo and will do my own setup later to tweak all I can get out of it. I plan on replacing the bridge for a nice spare one I have at the house, and plan on using medium guage strings too. Other than that I won't change anything else. And you really wouldn't have to change anything if you are new to banjos or wondering about the total package. This is the package you could buy, play out of the box and impress most people with. For beginners, its more than all you'll need to get started and will take you as far as you want to go. As for pros, or advanced pickers, the only downside would be the volume, it doesn't have quite the punch to stand out in a bluegrass band. But for local jams with friends or simply around the house picking, this is it! If you like the dark color but only want the open back, see the goodtime special here on amazon.

The PLAYING - Playability is incredible right out of the box. The action is very nice, low for clean and clear noting, and the neck is slim and easy to fret. The weight is 5.5 lbs and weighs considerable amount less than typical bluegrass banjos.

My THOUGHT - I have a very nice "hot-rodded" banjo that makes the ears bleed if played indoors and neighbors several houses down the street hear me playing if outdoors. It is loud which is great for jamming with several guitars and fiddles. And it also weight 12lbs! I purchased this banjo for the weight, and for the quality I'd only heard about. The banjo is more than I ever bargained for and at Amazon.com low price, you can't beat this banjo for the money.

BUY THIS BANJO - Period. If you are looking for an inexpensive banjo that will sound incredible, are looking to learn the banjo (resale is incredible on these Goodtimes), want a softer or quieter banjo to pick around the house, want to own a quality banjo...... THIS IS THE REAL DEAL.

It won't compete with banjos that cost thousands of dollars but for the price, you can't beat it. Get it, it's that good.

5Solid.  Sep 21, 2011 By Daniel Olivier Sutter
I'm a beginner and got this banjo today. It is sturdy and looks beautiful. I was and still am amazed at the volume and the authenticity of the sound - My first piece "Cripple Creek" really starts right away sounding like it's supposed to! I love that thing!
