Sounds Great Aug 16, 2010
By Todd A. Waller I'm a beginner but I'm very happy I spent a little extra and bought this one over some of the $200 ones I was really considering. The Crow book and CD are over my head, but the case is great, made in the USA, finger picks, electronic tuner, and strap make it worth buying the Crow Package over the regular Goodtime. Here's a picture of the Gig Bag it comes with worth $80 (copy and paste in browser). . . [...]

Good Banjo for a good price Jul 25, 2010
By tj I received this today and took it to Music Folk to set up. They said it didn't need set up that it was perfect the way it was. They were impressed that I got this banjo for 430 on Amazon. I have played around with the Crow tab book a little and this banjo is very comfortable to play and sounds great. Now for the lessons.

Great Price. Great Quality. Great Fun. May 13, 2011
By D. Rub I'm a beginning banjo player and ordered my Deering Goodtime banjo from Amazon.com after reading so many positive reviews all over the Internet. I wanted something that I could learn on but that would also last for years down the road. The fact that this banjo is made in the USA and the quality of the craftsmanship (3-ply maple rim, etc.) certainly helped to influence my decision. I also really like the simple look and pale color of this instrument.
I'm learning to play bluegrass banjo, but I bought the open back model for its lighter weight, lower price point, and lower volume (I live in an apartment). Now that I've been playing it for about a week, I feel great about my decision. This thing sounds wonderful and gives me all the volume I need without getting stones thrown at me. I can only imagine how great it will sound when I actually get to picking well.
I should note that it came out of the box with absolutely no imperfections and was already set up and ready to play (after a little tuning). Speaking of tuning, it seems to hold its tune very well...even with the way that I am stabbing at the strings as I learn.
The gig bag, picks, tuner, and strap that come with the package are just what I needed to get started. The Steve Martin CD is also something very different to add to my music collection, but the tabs are wwaaaayy over my head for now (maybe I can use that book in a year or two).
Anyway, enough wasting time writing this review; I've got to get back to playing Cripple Creek!
Why didn't I buy this one from the beginning? Jun 22, 2011
By Retrohousewife I have played the banjo off and on for seven years. I've gone through several banjos. The last one weighed 14 pounds and got really heavy when I took it to banjo camp. I decided I would order the Goodtime for practicing because it's so light. Well, I think it will become my main banjo. It's so light and easy to fret and the sound is very good. I am extremely happy with it. The gig bag is nice and padded and has a storage pocket. The tuner is really cool. The strap isn't great and I got two thumb picks and one finger pick so that doesn't do much good. I love the Steve Martin C.D. and tab book. I was playing "The Crow" in a matter of minutes. I highly recommend this banjo.
