4great mandolin for little money  Oct 30, 2010 By K. Nguyen "musicLover"
I have tried many mandolins in music stores and this one is comparable to the ones costing upto 250$.
I got this from a friend and love it. I did not know much about mandolin until I tried it a month ago (playing guitars for so long) and this little instrument caught my interest.
I learn quite a bit online as to how to setup a mandolin (most of them have to be setup before they can be tuned !! music store charges for this setup and not many of them provides this service).
Here are a few things I did to improve its sound:
1) remove the pick guard, the sound appears to be louder to my ears
2) lower the bridge to get lower string action
3) adjust bridge position to get proper intonation (fret 12 note should be exactly one octave higher than the free string)
4) file the upper part of the bridge, at both end so they become smooth and not sharp.
The sharp edges cut into my hand.
5) add a little piece of leather between the strings and the end pin cover (where the string loops go into) to avoid buzzing. It buzzes due to the string rattles against this metal cover !! The buzzing goes away completely.

Mine does not stay in tune for long (a few days) so I am going to replace the tuning set.
In general, this is a wonderful mandolin for very low price. You need to be a handy man to make little adjustment / fix-up to get it to its best. The ones that cost 200$-300$ is about the same to my feel and I believe they cost more as more man effort has been put in to achieve what I did myself.
I am twice happier with mine now compare to a few weeks ago.

Update: I returned this mandolin to my friend and bought my own. After 9 months of playing mandolins and trying out a dozen of them, I recommend the beginner to get a solid top mandolin (lowest price is between 150$ to 200$ brand new). The solid top give a warm and louder tone, and it gets better with time, than the laminated top [See my Fender 53S review for more details]

5Great Instrument  Jul 23, 2010 By J. Abramson "Tenor Banjo Man"
Gave up on my tenor banjo "experiment" and got this Savannah mandolin. It is really a beautifully made instrument with a wonderful shiny tone. Have been playing guitars of all sizes and sorts for 40+ years so I can say with a bit of authority that this little Chinese beauty is very well put together. The fit, finish, bindings and wood are surprisingly high quality for such an inexpensive purchase price and as I said it sounds wonderful. Seems to be set up perfectly, stays in tune without tweeking it and the action is easy on the fingers. Am taking it to a jam session tomorrow. Can't wait to hear it mixed in with the guitar pickers. Perhaps I will outgrow the Savannah one day when my skills improve, but for now, it doesn't sound or look cheap and is very easy to play. Highly recommended.

4I love this mandolin  Jul 24, 2011 By Dave the Brave
I bought this as my first mandolin a few months back. I took it to a local shop where they made some adjustments, such as lowering the nut to improve the action. After this tune up, it plays as easy as any one that I've tested in a music store. It has a bright, clear sound and doesn't buzz when played. The local shop that worked on it told me that it plays as well as a $200-$300 type and called it a 'good mid-range mandolin'. For less than a hundred dollars, this is an amazing deal. I upgraded to a better case than the one it was packaged with and bought one of those skinny leather mandolin straps. Having a shop tune it up is well worth the cost, in my case $25.

The tuners are good, the neck is straight, etc. The only flaw was a tiny crack in the glaze where the neck meets the body. I can overlook this tiny flaw. The color is a pretty reddish gold, fading to black, which is better looking than some other budget mandolins on the market. I had intended to upgrade in a year or so, but don't really feel the need now.

Most importantly, I've bonded with the thing, and can't wait to get home from work so that I can play it.

5Savannah A-Style Mandolin  Oct 14, 2010 By sweet carolina girl
Love this little "Jewel". It is a super bargain and has a wonderful sound.

2You get what you pay for  Apr 19, 2011 By Tom
OK, maybe two stars is lower than it deserves, but here's the deal: having played guitar I wanted to learn mandolin, so I bought this figuring it would be a good starter. It was decent enough. But if you plan on actually playing mandolin, you really don't want to buy this. The action is far too high and the high and low sounds (low especially) are not clear. About a month and a half into learning I sold this to a friend who only wanted one to mess around with and I invested in a good mandolin; the difference in sound and ease of playing was huge.

Bottom line: if you're just looking to mess around and not be too serious, this is a fine mandolin. But if you want a mandolin that will sound good and hold its own, spend an extra couple hundred dollars.
