Description

If we were to judge the caliber of acoustic guitar pickups simply by customer response, then the K&K Pure Western would be the hands-down winner. Our customers simply love this pickup, often coming back to order 3 or 4 more after installing one for the first time. Like the B-Band AST and the PUTW #27, the K&K Pure pickup secures to the underside of your bridgeplate, inside the guitar. Although it's officially a passive pickup, it generates a high output, using 3 pickup heads (4 for the "Classic" version), to capture the warmth of your guitar with remarkable accuracy. These pickups are designed to be super-glued to the soundboard, but K&K is now also shipping them with adhesive nylon strips, so you can experiment with placement first, if you so choose. Also, some smaller guitars (like 00s and parlors) require the smaller version of the Pure pickup, with slightly smaller pickup heads. It is worth noting, too, that while this smaller version (the "mini") was originally designed for use in smaller instruments, K&K is now recommending it for all permanent installations of the Pure.

5What a great pickup!  May 07, 2010 By BonesighNYC
I sit-in on acoustic gigs on occasion and wanted to be able to use my Martin. I did some research and decided to order this pickup. Installation was not difficult. Just take your time and go through some "dry-runs" as suggested by the manufacturer before gluing the pickups into place. The sound is fantastic! Sounds just like my Martin unplugged, only amplified. There is enough output from this pickup to drive a PA directly, but I run it through my external LR Baggs Gigpro preamp to be able to tweak the EQ a little and control my own gain. If I need to add a pickup to another acoustic in the future, I will buy another of these hands-down. In fact, I will probably not even look for an acoustic electric guitar in the future. I'll just buy an acoustic and add one of these.

5I agree! It's probably the best!  Jan 03, 2008 By K. Abbott "Texas_Kev"
I bought one of these hoping to augment the sound of my Fishman Prefix piezo system - it just didn't have enough warmth after I had equalized the "quack" out of the piezo signal. My Fishman already came with a stereo output jack (you can split the signal from your guitar to process both pickup signals separately), so I just wired it into that jack as the second source. Much to my surprise, I ended up using the Fishman system to augment the K&K Pure Western Mini to get the sound I liked best - and it's a GOOD sound. I'm getting one of these for each of my other guitars. For about 80-90 bucks, this thing has got to be the best bang for the buck out there. I did the installation myself, but I'm pretty handy with those sorts of things, and it came out just fine. The K&K does put out a signal that is arguably lacking high frequencies, but I was able to equalize more into it to get a great sound. Adding a little punch from the Fishman Prefix piezo system I already had, it sounds spectacular! I'm planning to use varying levels of the piezo signal, which I have equalized to put out a very crisp, bright, high end, to control the different sounds I want to have available to me. The K&K sounds great for strumming all by itself, but I like a bit more definition that comes with adding a little piezo signal for fingerpicking or flatpicking. I can't believe how happy I am with this affordable pickup.

5Works as advertised! Great pickup.  Nov 22, 2010 By Michael Lyman
Great pickup, good instructions, straight-forward installation for anyone of moderate woodworking experience (you're working with superglue & wood here). You will for-sure benefit from borrowing or buying the Stuart-McDonald endpin reamer (that's the hard part of the install).

Sound quality is great without a pre-amp. No buzzing or humming at different frequencies.

Everything about the order process was flawless as well. No complaints all around.

5Classic Acoustic Pickup  Aug 13, 2010 By P. Smith
I've used a lot of pickups in various acoustic guitars, but the K&K is the simplest, least intrusive (in terms of installation), and with a very decent replication of the acoustic sound of the guitar out of all the ones I've tried. I've tried LR Baggs, Fishman undersaddle, Fishman Aura, etc.

I really despise the sound of just an undersaddle pickup. The "quackiness" of their sound is annoying and detracts from the sound of the actual guitar. Using an Aura system takes away that quackiness, but at the price of additional complexity and expense. I like the simplicity of this pickup. No batteries to change, no preamp to fiddle with (you may not need a preamp at all), less areas to fiddle with in terms of EQing the signal, and less stage clutter. Just plug into your PA or amp (some of which already have a preamp) and go.

In terms of installation, there is minimal surgery to the guitar: no need to rout out a the saddle slot or trim the saddle to compensate for an undersaddle pickup, for example. Only thing you need is an endpin plug, but you can get smaller endpins that accommodate a 1/8" jack vs 1/4" ([...]) that makes the size of the endpin hole smaller and very unobtrusive.

Keep in mind I play in a lightly amplified acoustic trio (2 guitars plus acoustic bass) using a Bose L1 system. If using an acoustic guitar in the context of a loud rock band, then another style of pickup such as a soundhole pickup may be a better solution as you can turn up the volume on these perhaps a bit louder before getting feedback. But if you're looking for good acoustic replication of your guitar, in an acoustic context, that is simple to use, has a great signal out of the box, this pickup is hard to beat.

5Excellent.  Apr 22, 2010 By Albert J. Lee
Pros:
1. Price is very reasonable.
2. No pre-amp = no batteries and no worries.
3. Sounds good even without pre-amp.
4. Aside from hole drilling, installation is newbie friendly.

Cons:
1. Watch for feedback. Not a huge issue, but it can sometimes crop up depending on where the monitors are. I will get a sound hole cover, as another reviewer suggested.
2. Without pre-amp, it's a little mid heavy.

I will install this in every guitar I will buy.
