Great entry-level mandolin Apr 01, 2010
By Kevin Davey It may be a little early to rate this instrument, since I only acquired it about two weeks ago. But I've played it at every opportunity, and have already used it in a gig. I am very happy with this mandolin. It isn't really a rock-bottom entry-level instrument, but it isn't a real high-end collector's item either. What it is is a well-made piece of work, with some things you won't find in the real rock-bottom instruments that are out there. It has solid top, back and sides, and adjustable truss rod, a radiused fretboard, and a burgundy finish that makes it a little different from all the blond and sunburst mandos out there. And it sounds great -- it's loud enough to be heard, and it stays in tune from one song to the next. I'm a novice as a mando player, but have played guitar for a number of years, and it's easy to tell this is a pretty nice instrument.
It was shipped with the strings loosened and the floating bridge not installed, so I had to set it up and tune it. But once I was done with that, it was ready to go. It comes without a case or gig bag, and without a strap, so those things needed to be purchased separately.

a great mandolin at reasonable price Dec 15, 2011

I just bought one of these two weeks ago for quite less than 300$ on the Black Friday (free shipping, tax included) , and this is my ... 8-th mandolin !!! It arrives exactly as the first reviewer described, I won't repeat here. The top and back are all hand carved solid wood, with Kentucky's quality as assurance. I took me 30 mins to install and adjusted the bridge. Tuning takes quite a while (very normal for a brand new mandolin). The neck is straight and I have no issue setting up the mandolin myself (for someone not familiar with mandolin, it would cost between 50$ to 100$ for a luthier to set it up properly). I don't have to replace the strings as the strings are NEW and appear to be good ones. The mandolin takes many days before the tuning become stable (again this is normal on brand new one as the wood contracts under string pressure). It does sound louder than all other mandolins I have owned (and sold off keeping only one). I really love the sound of this mandolin and would recommend as the starter mandolin. It will grow with the player for many years. If a new starter choses a cheaper mandolin, he/she will have to replace it in just a few months. For around 300$, this is the best one to get. And don't forget to have a luthier to set it up if you don't know how.
Updates: after 3 weeks, the mandolin kind of "breaks-in", i.e. the tuning stays pretty solid. I replaced the factory strings with D'Addario J62 strings and it sounds much much better afterward. It's a pleasure to play this one.
