Well worth the money Sep 06, 2011
By Scott Minter I'm heading to India in November of this year. I was told by the leader of our group that I couldn't take my more expensive hand made mandolins. I purchased the Kentucky KM-350 from Amazon to take with me. The mandolin came with the bridge off of the instrument. It was wrapped in a plastic bag with a rubber band around it. It took me roughly 10 minutes to set the bridge to the proper position where the intonation was correct when tuned and then at the 12th fret. I have owned another pac rim mandolin which needed quite a bit of set up from my luthier to dress the frets to make it playable. The Kentucky KM-350 has no buzzing on any of the frets after I set the bridge.
The fit and finish is better than I would expect from this price point. It has a very nice sunburst finish. On the back where the neck meets the body the binding could be a little nicer but it will do. In regard to the sound, it isn't as loud as my hand made instruments but it will be loud enough for what I am using it for. I own an Eastman mandolin. It isn't as loud as the Eastman but the sound is more complex and woody. I believe the volume will increase with time as I learn to draw the best sound out of the instrument. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase.
