 Plug that hole! Jan 05, 2008

I like to keep my Martin in a stand & out of the case for a couple weeks at a time, but I live in an exceptionally dry climate. So I need some kind of humidifier installed when not in use. The advantage of the Kyser of course is it plugs the sound hole, and keeps the moisture circulating inside the body, whereas other humidifiers like the Planet Waves and Dampits leave most of the sound hole open to the dry air. For that reason I highly recommend the Kyser as an "in the stand" humidifer.
Now as far as the case goes, I use a Planet Wave. because it doesn't touch to wood at all. The Kyser does, and it is for this reason I wouldn't install it when my guitar was in the case.
As many others have pointed out on the Net, for some reason this humidifier has a plastic ring mounted around it's soft body. I don't see any purpose for it, and in virtually every review I've read, people complain that this ring scratched their soundhole. Not good. So remove the plastic ring.
Note - I also only mount one side of the humidifier in the sound hole. Its much eaiser to remove this way, and still effectively seals most of the sound hole.

Humidifiers in wooden stringed instruments are a necessity. But they're also a pain in the butt....all of 'em. There's either a sponge (that leaks) or a syringe (that drips) or a container that starts to smell like mildew after a while. Humidifiers are a necessary evil.
I use Kyser humidifiers because they're the least expensive alternative 'in my experience' to get the job done. Other humidifiers I've tried (some more expensive) create worse maintenance issue with fluids and their placement. . . .or the prospect of coming loose and bouncing around on braces. With the Kyser, I can wring it out, dry the plastic and then go through the awkward, flexing and bending gyrations to get it into the sound hole without leakage. These things could be designed just 1/8" larger in diameter and it would make a world of difference in installation. But, they are what they are. . . .3 stars. Ain't my patent. 'Can't change it.
Anyway, these things manage to keep my guitars humidified enough to avoid cracks.

Not a good product to use, to clumsy insert in guitar had to return product. Better off getting a room humidifier.
