3A Great Addition to a Mandolin Collection  Nov 05, 2011 By J. L. Bredin
My wife gave me a Recording King resonator mandolin for my birthday and it is a fantastic alternative for a mandolin player looking for a different sound, though I would be disappointed if this were the only mandolin I could play. The sound isn't entirely even and neither the action nor intonation are adjustable. The mandolin is loud has an unusual sound -- like a super-amplified telephone voice pushed through a train tunnel.

The appearance of the Recording King is unusual, especially if you're accustomed to mandolins. It's large-- too large for its case, even. My wife was afraid to take it out and polish it up before she gave it to me, the fit inside the case was so tight. The interior padding scars quickly as the instrument cuts into its overly-snug compartment. The case isn't of terribly high quality, either; rivets holding the cordura fabric are already loose.

The color of the mandolin is hardly champagne. Mine looks more like a freshly-minted penny. I think for the Amazon picture, someone applied a rub to give an aged appearance. I like the finish and color, but if you order on-line seeing this picture or the one on Recording King's web page, you might get a surprise. Look around on the web for other pictures.

Playing this mandolin is a lot of fun. Almost every note sounds like a harmonic. It rings a lot, but some of the ringing could be in your head. The notes are loud and percussive -- violent attack and moderate mid-range sustain. It's almost as if the mandolin has an equalizer damping the post-attack low and high frequencies.

Not every note carries as full of a sound as others. My Recording King doesn't resonate any tone for B flat -- a missing blue note when you play in G. Don't rely on the Recording King for sweet sounding tremolo to fill out a ballad, either.

The action is stiff and there's nothing to adjust, beyond changing the strings. The bridge is permanently affixed to the resonator-- nicely-protected, at least. There's no truss rod adjustment, either.

If you're read this far and are looking for an opined conclusion, here it is. Relative to the price of other mandolins, the Recording King resonator is a good value for someone looking for another sound to complement a collection of mandolins. It's a terrible only-mandolin (or even second) choice since the tone isn't terribly full, the action isn't adjustable, the attack is explosive.

3You get what you pay for!  Mar 13, 2012 By Carl A. Mcneece
This is not a bad mandolin, although it was just a bit disappointing. It is great looking, and the price made it a real bargain. However, there were some problems. The fact that it is an inch longer(15") than the normal mandolin scale is the first issue. For shipping purposes it came with some slack in the strings. When I tried to tune it to the normal GDAE tuning, I broke both E-strings. (A longer scale means that there has to be more tension on the strings in order to achieve the same pitch as on a 14" scale.) The problem was compounded by the "sticky" tuners that makes it hard to tune. Even after the liberal application of graphite, they still stick. I finally decided to string it as a mandola (CGDA) with mandola strings, thus putting less tension on the strings. Another alternative would be to use extra light gauge strings and tune it GDAE. The next problem was that the intonation was off. After close inspection, it was obvious that the bridge was slanted the wrong way! (Distance from the nut to the bridge should be slightly longer for the base strings than the treble strings.) So I took the strings off, took the top off the resonator, and rotated the cone so that the bridge was slanted correctly. After reassembling everything, it plays well. Sounds very good on blues tunes!

4What a kick  May 04, 2011 By Akfolk
I bought this to be able to hold my own with a friend who brings his 6 string banjo to our Irish sessions. I don't have any problem being heard. Not for every style, but is fun. Some suggest it needs to be played as a slide mando. If you don't have a slide, try a deep well socket from Craftsman or other that fits your finger of choice and have fun. It's what this instrument is about.
