Taylor Guitars Big Baby Taylor: The Versatile Dreadnought

The Baby Taylor’s big sibling, a 15/16-scale Dreadnought with a solid Sitka spruce top and sapele-laminate back and sides, boasts a surprisingly full voice, comes with a lightweight gig bag for easy portability, and makes a trusty companion wherever you go — even if it's just to the couch.

Slightly smaller than than a full-size guitar, the Big Baby looks and feels like a grownup.

5A Great Guitar  Jan 15, 2009 By A Guy in Indianapolis
I bought one of these two years ago from a local dealer and paid about $100.00 less. That said, it has very good tone and its smaller size lets you wrap yourself around it and really feel in control- Mine was well-made and sounds as good as acoustics costing a lot, lot more. I've shown it to professionals who were impressed with its quality and sound. Definitely a good choice not only for a beginner but for more advanced players, as well.

5It Shouldn't Be this Good, but it IS!  Dec 17, 2009 By R. Langdon "Scriptor"
I have been playing acoustic guitar for years and have played/owned quite a few top of the line guitars. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to find the Big Baby Taylor extremely enjoyable to play. It has great tone, volume and clarity. The Taylor neck gives this Baby a nice, more expensive feel. It has a smaller, more intimate size but it is large enough to do the job on stage or studio. It is a great guitar for a beginner (much better than many other "starter" guitars) but there are a number of folks (even professionals) who use this guitar in live performances and in the studio. If you close your eyes and listen, you might not be able to tell it from much more expensive guitars.

I like the gig bag and take the BBT most anywhere I travel (even if it is just to the local office).

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a reasonably priced, quality starter instrument or an experienced player looking for a great traveling companion or additional guitar that has versatility of uses. If you get one as an addition to your "stable", like me, you may find yourself reaching for the Big Baby Taylor as often as your more expensive guitars.

5Probably the BEST guitar on the market today, in terms of sound to $  Apr 06, 2011 By Verichai
I purchased a Big Baby several weeks ago and now believe this guitar is an either an anomaly, a mistake or a social experiment by Taylor. I cannot figure out how a $400 guitar could sound this amazing or play this incredibly. It easily sounds as good as some $1500-$2500 guitars I have played, only lighter and more comfortable! Just an amazing instrument, overall. I have had a very difficult time putting it down.

I did extensive research before I purchased this instrument, carefully comparing many guitars. The Taylor guitars emerged, without question, as some of the warmest, most resonant and playable acoustic guitars in any category. The 200 series was out of my price range and the 100 series is essentially made from the same materials as the Big Baby. The price difference allowed me to also get a nice molded case and sound hole pickup and I have a very versatile guitar for everything from song writing to recording to camp fire strumming and late night, living room jam sessions.

Some of the things I really like about this guitar (besides the great tone and action and name 'Taylor' on the headstock) are the natural grain of the unfinished Spruce top, the updated yet elegant shape of the pick guard, the rich ebony fretboard, and the most understated feature: the very muted but very cool laser-etched rosette.

For anyone concerned about the laminate back and sides, consider this: I upgraded from a very decent, all-mahogany guitar which, by comparison, sounded like rubber bands stretched across a shoebox. Also, the laminate is more durable and much more resistant to environmental factors such as humidity.

In summation, this guitar represents an incredible value in terms of playability and sound for the money. Now, if they would just do something about the name...

5Great First Guitar  Nov 14, 2009 By M. Wayne Brown
My Taylor Big Baby is my first guitar, so I'm writing this review from that prospective. It arrived from Amazon in perfect condition. The sound quality is great. It is a well crafted guitar with a very attractive look. Learning on this guitar has been easy so far. I hope to continue enjoying my Taylor for many years to come and I believe that the quality in workmanship will ensure that it last for as long as I am able to play.

5Amazing Guitar for the Money, and It's a Taylor  Feb 14, 2011 By T. Carlsen
This is an amazing guitar for the money, and it's a Taylor. I just love to listen to my daughter play this guitar. It has a very nice ring to it, and it sounds especially amazing with finger picking. It has that famous bright Taylor sound. This could be THE best value in guitars at any price.

The neck is easy to play and made of mahogany. The top is made of quality 100% spruce (no laminate). It is slightly undersized, which is perfect for a slightly smaller person. It has most of the quality and amazing sound that Taylor is known for (but not quite as deep, and the choice to use strong laminates on the sides and back was the ideal place to save money). Taylor makes this model guitar with laser precision so you never get a bad Taylor. Also, I felt the Big Baby was significantly better than the Baby Taylor, so I would recommend the Big Baby. After 14 months of having this Big Baby Taylor guitar around the house, I can say that this was a steal of a deal.

There is a reason why Taylor Guitars are played by music superstars, from Taylor Swift to Leo Kotke to Dave Matthews to Alan Jackson to Billy Corgan to Jewel to Clint Black to the Edge of U2 (which you can see in the Slane Castle DVD concert).

If you are going to invest time and money in lessons, then protect that investment with a quality instrument. You can ruin a child's experience with music if you give the child a cheap instrument. After researching guitars, I settled on this Taylor Guitar.
